How to Use Emojis, reactions, and GIFs in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a complex communication and collaboration tool but it still has features that you will find in messaging apps like Slack. You can send plain text messages but Microsoft Teams also has reactions like Skype and Facebook Messenger, GIFs like Slack and Skype, and Emoji like other apps.

With emojis, GIFs, reactions and stickers, you can bring your creative energy and sense of humor to group chats and private messages. These extras help establish a friendly tone and intent without the body language, facial expressions, and other benefits of direct communication.

Emoji, reactions, and GIFs in Microsoft Teams are all supported by default. You don’t have to install the app in Microsoft Teams or on the desktop to use it. Emojis, reactions, and GIFs work well from the desktop app and from the web app.

To use emoji in Microsoft Teams, follow these steps.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Choose channel or chat conversations.
  3. Click New Conversation.
  4. Click inside the text input field.
  5. Click the emoji/smiley button to open the emoji panel.
  6. Click the emoji to send it.

In Windows 10, you can also tap on Win+ to open Windows 10 emoji panel and enter emoji from there.

Reactions can be provided for messages, for active meetings, and for files that have been shared. Reactions are limited to six. To use React in Microsoft Teams, follow these steps.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Open a channel or chat thread.
  3. Hover over the more options button next to the message.
  4. A reaction will appear.
  5. Click a reaction and it will be added to the message.

GIFs may seem inappropriate for serious work-related conversations, but Microsoft Teams still has them. To use GIFs in Microsoft Teams, follow these steps.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Open a channel or chat thread.
  3. Click New Conversation.
  4. Click inside the text input field.
  5. Click the GIF button.
  6. Enter something in the search field to find the relevant GIF.
  7. Select a GIF from the results and tap Enter to send it.

Emojis, GIFs and reactions are becoming popular with messaging apps. They may not be appropriate for all conversations but are hard to avoid given that everyone uses them and oftentimes, they are expected to be used.
